The Hungarian Musicological Society was founded in 1993. Its aim is to advocate the interests of Hungarian musicology and music criticism in all relevant forums and to organize musicological events. The Society organizes professional events, conferences, exhibitions, publishes books, and is active in scholarly and dissemination activities. It publishes the quarterly peer-reviewed Magyar Zene [Hungarian Music], the most widely profiled musicological journal in Hungary, featuring research papers, translations of important foreign articles and reviews, complete with abstracts and contributors’ biographies in English.

The Hungarian Musicological Society was sponsored in 2024 by the Hungarian Academy of Arts and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
